Course Description: This level 2 course helps you attain proficiency in an interactive setting by building on the basic Spanish language skills you acquired in level 1. The language is presented within the context of the contemporary, Spanish-speaking world and its culture. The primary objective of my class is for you to not only learn Spanish well enough to be successful when going on to the next level but also to learn in a fun, relaxed environment and to develop an appreciation of the Spanish language and culture for life-long use and enjoyment.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to do the following in Spanish:
Talk about travel and the airport
Talk about your daily routine and parts of the body
Talk about train travel in Peru and Mexico
Talk about eating at a restaurant
Talk about Hispanic holidays
Talk about computers and the Internet
Make and receive phone calls
Check into a hotel or hostel
Describe city life and country life
Talk about cars and driving
Process: We will start with a review of the basic skills from level 1 and build on these as we move forward throughout the year. The course will be guided by the National Language Standards, the 21st Century Skills Map and the guidelines of the California State World Language Standards. The specific topics to be covered will be addressed through content enriched instruction in which you will make connections between the content, your own life, and the Spanish-speaking world. We will practice the learned material daily. You will be evaluated on a weekly and sometimes daily basis for all the skills practiced including speaking, writing, reading, vocabulary, grammar, and listening. We play many games to practice and reinforce skills. We will also be singing, conversing with each other and occasionally doing Spanish-themed crafts, projects, and presentations.
Homework: Homework is assigned most nights but rarely assigned on Fridays. In this way you’ll be able to spend time with your family. Assignments and classwork are posted on my class website. Check the website daily. Homework is due the next day unless otherwise stated. I will collect and check the homework for accuracy.
Evaluation: You will be given several quizzes in every chapter, sometimes daily, with an evaluation at the end of most chapters. The evaluation may be in written form, an oral presentation, a project, or a combination of these.
The following summarizes the categories that will be used to calculate the basis for your grades:
Content Evaluations: 70%
Homework/Classwork: 10%
Written Proficiency 10%
Oral Proficiency: 10%
A modified standard grading percentage incorporating all categories will be used to calculate the class grade as follows:
90-100% A; 80-89% B, 72-79% C; 60-71% D and 59 or below F
Behavior Expectations & Classroom Conduct
Learning a new language is not easy and requires that you are willing to meet the following expectations:
1. Participate. (You can not learn language without practice, so class participation is essential)
2. Attend class regularly and arrive on time. When you miss class you miss a lot.
3. Come to class prepared (pen/pencil, paper, textbook, composition book, and binder)
4. Speak Spanish!!! every day!
5. Do your assignments on time
6. Be part of our learning community (Learning a language requires risk taking and therefore requires a supportive community of learners)
7. Respect yourself, your peers and your teacher
8. Work hard, contribute and support your classmates
You will be held accountable to all the rules outlined in the Thousand Oaks High School student handbook. All CVUSD and TOHS attendance policies and procedures will be followed in this class. Students may be dropped from the class due to excessive truancies, absences, and/or tardies.
Class Supplies:
You will need to bring to class daily the following items:
• Así se dice 2 textbook, Así se dice 2 workbook (both are provided by the school)
Recommended Supplies:
Tutoring: We move through the material in this class at a relatively quick pace. A qualified, regularly scheduled weekly or biweekly tutor is essential for many students to help them be successful in Spanish. I strongly recommend that you get one even if you feel you are just beginning to struggle with the material. Don't wait until you feel overwhelmed; the earlier you begin to work with a tutor the better chance you have to catch up before you miss too much material or get too far behind in the class. You can check with the Career Center here on campus where you can get the names of peer tutors at the school. I also can recommend some professional tutors
